Celebrate Japanese culture, friendship and tradition at the Canberra Nara Candle Festival, returning to the beautiful surrounds of Lennox Gardens on Saturday 24 October 2026.
Held annually at Canberra Nara Peace Park, the festival celebrates the longstanding sister-city relationship between Canberra and Nara, Japan, bringing the community together through Japanese food, music, performances and cultural activities.
As evening falls, the park comes alive with the warm glow of 2,000 candles, creating a beautiful display inspired by Nara’s traditional candle festivals and symbolising peace, friendship and goodwill.
What to Expect
Candle Lighting: The highlight of the evening begins at dusk, when 2,000 candles illuminate Canberra Nara Peace Park, transforming the gardens into a glowing celebration of peace and friendship.
Japanese Food and Markets: Explore a variety of food stalls offering Japanese favourites, sweet treats and other international flavours, alongside market stalls throughout the festival grounds.
Cultural Performances: Enjoy live music, traditional Japanese drumming, dance and martial arts demonstrations, including performances celebrating the cultural connection between Canberra and Nara.
Activities and Entertainment: Discover Japanese culture through hands-on lantern-making activities, cultural demonstrations and a colourful cosplay competition. Visitors can also ring the Rotary Peace Bell, a symbol of peace and goodwill.

The Canberra Nara Candle Festival is a free, family-friendly event held at Canberra Nara Peace Park in Lennox Gardens, Yarralumla.
The festival runs from 4pm to 9pm, with the candle lighting taking place at approximately 7pm. A free shuttle bus will operate between selected parking locations and the festival grounds.
