Discover the peaceful beauty of Canberra’s Old Parliament House Rose Gardens with a guided tour, where almost a century of history meets thousands of spectacular blooms.

Established in 1927, these historic gardens are home to more than 4,000 rose bushes representing 500 varieties. Nestled within Canberra’s National Triangle, they offer a colourful escape and a fascinating glimpse into the capital’s horticultural heritage.

Beyond their beauty, the gardens hold some remarkable stories. Find rare varieties including the Butterfly Rose of China, whose delicate petals change colour as they bloom, shifting through shades of yellow, apricot, pink and crimson. There’s also the Persian Damask rose, celebrated as one of the world’s most fragrant varieties.

Look a little closer and you’ll find roses honouring famous figures throughout history, including Queen Elizabeth II, William Shakespeare, Sir Donald Bradman and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. Each adds another layer of character to these much loved gardens.

Today, the National Capital Authority cares for the gardens with the support of almost 100 dedicated volunteers. Their work throughout the seasons helps preserve this remarkable part of Canberra’s living heritage.
